Why you only need to get 70% done to deliver value faster (and how this shows your value as a leader)

Do you make the mistake of thinking you need to do all the work to deliver value faster?

It’s a trap.

Only in rare cases does someone expect you to produce perfection without any help. But we get in our own way, trying to make everything right (perfect) before showing our work.

Only to find out we missed the mark and created more work (and less value).

In the last two years, I’ve seen teams that engage with technical and business leaders at the 70% mark enjoy collaboration that delivers value faster.

What 70% done looks like

The key is bringing something prepared, but not fully baked.

Show your work and explain your thinking. Take away the mystery and connect the dots. Invite them to contribute their insights and experience.

Let them ask questions, explore options, and make decisions.

Why other leaders want to see your 70% complete work

Three basic reasons leaders want to see your work and collaborate with you:

  1. Seeing your work helps them understand what’s happening
  2. Their contribution shapes the outcome for everyone’s benefit
  3. They are happy to help, especially if it reduces friction and delivers value

This also gives other leaders a sense of ownership of the outcome.

How this shows your value as a leader

It’s powerful to share the load and the recognition with others.

When you ask other leaders to help, it signals that you see their value. Collaborating allows them to earn recognition for their contribution. Solving problems together fuels everyone’s growth.

Showing your work lets people see the value of your leadership.
